Bob's Techniques
Bob's unique and innovative nymphing techniques allow trout to be caught 365 days a year, even when there are no hatches or rising fish. He specializes specifically in the instruction of the nymphing techniques and how to employ them for the river's plentiful trout population. Because the Muskegon River receives heavy spawning runs of Pacific Salmon in the Fall and Steelhead in the Spring, the trout also feed heavily on the dropping eggs of these Lake Michigan migrants, as well as the nymphal life of this productive river. |
Bob's Equipment
Bob floats the river in a 16' Hyde Drift Boat. Flies and use of fly tackle is included.

Seasons of the Muskegon
November thru April- November signals the start of the "winter" season, where Bob's nymph techniques become highly effective for browns and rainbows in the 12"-18" range, with the occasional fish topping 20" as well as the bonus steelhead fresh out of Lake Michigan. With the salmon run waning, the trout are still heavily keyed in on egg patterns as well as the abundant caddis larva. With or without strike indicators, 15 or more trout are not uncommon for a day of fishing. As we get closer to the longer days of spring, the numbers of steelhead increase and the trout once again feed heavily behind the spawning lake-run rainbows. Warm, sunny days in March can account for some of the best dry fly fishing of the year. Massive and predictable early stone fly hatches bring reckless holdover trout to the surface from early to mid afternoon. You have to experience it to believe it!
May thru October- Once the steelhead have head back to the big pond, the dry fly action begins in earnest on warm, May afternoons. Towards the end of the month, with the right weather conditions, huge swarms of gray drake spinners fall to the surface during their mating rituals. Some of the largest trout caught on dries are caught during this time period. Also, right on the heels of the steelhead, is a large run of spawning suckers that concentrates large, holdover trout in the shallows behind them. The rest of the Summer months has a spattering of hatches that bring trout of various sizes to the surface in the evening. Daytime fishing is reliable for trout on nymphs and streamers.
